About Dr. Aarti Patel

Dr. Aarti Patel, MD

I am a Doctor of Medicine and specialize in Child, Adolescent and Adult psychiatry. With extensive training in evidence-based treatment of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, I offer a comprehensive, personalized approach tailored to my patients’ individual needs.

The brain is an organ where specialized treatment may be needed to help restore physiological balance and correct functioning. Keeping all aspects of each individual in mind, treatment plans are developed with a combination of evidence based medication, when needed, with a guided approach to therapy, so together, we can address you as a whole person. I also consider alternative treatment options based on the clinical safety and researched evidence. Psychiatric treatments can be an effective tool in restoring the soul, which has a direct impact on the well-being of our mind and emotional state. I carefully monitor each individual, ensuring dignity and healing are promoted and protected. I believe in educating, empowering, and supporting my patients and their families so that the individualized treatment plan is a means to achieve life goals.

I completed my adult psychiatry residency and child and adolescent fellowship in Psychiatry at The University of Kentucky. I was an active leader throughout my years of training and played an integral role as chief resident. I was awarded outstanding resident physician and the highest honors in research. Following my training I relocated to Tampa, where I live with my family. When I’m not working, I enjoy playing with my two young kids and spending time with family and friends, staying active with outdoor activities, giving back to the community, and traveling.

Aarti Patel, MD uses a perspectives and family-centered approach towards psychiatric evaluation. This approach considers the patient's psychiatric symptoms and examines the four aspects of each individual: disease, dimensional, behavior, and life story. The perspectives approach offers a way of understanding the nature and origin of the behaviors that lead to treatment and provides a clear structure for developing personalized treatment plans. Dr. Patel’s thorough evaluations acknowledge what is known about biological contributions to psychiatric disease, personality, and behavior. Every psychiatric disorder is not the result of a "broken part" in the brain but may have other and/or multiple origins. Childhood, adolescence, and young adult years are times of extraordinary physical, emotional, and intellectual growth.  Emotional and mental challenges and adjustments are an important—and typical—part of brain development until the age of 25. But sometimes, mental health issues can be overwhelming and may interfere with typical development and everyday functioning.  When this occurs, evidence-based psychiatric treatment  can help re-balance the brain and behavior to improve or restore the development and ability to function in daily life.

Dr. Aarti Patel considers each patient’s developmental stage and works with the patient and/or family to create a specific treatment plan.  Medication is not always necessary, however in many cases, medication can be very effective in helping the child, adolescent or young adult to achieve his/her treatment goals.

Our treatment planning may involve a review of psychological testing reports, genetic testing, lab work, or referrals for specialized therapy (eating therapy, OT/PT). Dr. Patel believes in collaborative care and works with outside service providers, such as pediatricians, schools and other behavioral health professionals in order to determine the appropriate treatment and monitoring of progress.
